“An expert is someone who knows some of the worst mistakes that can be made in their subject and how to avoid them,” said the German physicist Werner Heisenberg. It highlights how one can achieve success only when blending passion and skill with the wisdom brought by experience.

Although it is a near-unanimous opinion that building expertise and experience make the odds and speed of success greater, organizations worldwide are facing a dearth of seasoned professionals who can navigate through the challenges of their industries.

“There are many young, energetic, and passionate engineers in multiple industries we work with. But they don’t have the finesse and experience brought by senior engineers who are unfortunately retiring,” says Chad St-Louis, president and CEO of STL Engineering.

Lending organizations this much needed expertise so they can focus on their goals is at the core of STL Engineering’s mission. St-Louis and his team of experts are well-equipped to support organizations in their end-to-end product development, from the planning and requirements phase to conceptual development, rapid prototyping, design verification, detailed designing, procurement, build, qualification testing, and low to high-rate volume production. STL’s team also helps clients optimize their supply chains to meet cost targets, improve lead times, and revamp manufacturing processes.

Our business models make us easier to work with because we effectively become part of the client’s team. We adapt to their systems and learn about their environment. Our flexibility is key to a successful partnership

The team understands that one of the biggest challenges engineering firms face is tackling large projects with small in house teams and tight deadlines. To resolv that strain, STL collaborates with clients at every turn and delivers operational excellence on their key business processes. It is a one-team approach with a positive can-do mindset backed by engineers with vast experience in industries like aerospace, defense, space or satcom, automotive, rail, and telecom. Even in turnkey projects, STL offers collaboration and management that keeps clients in tune at every step.

A Client-First Mindset at its Core

Established to provide customers with an expert technical resource for their thermal or mechanical project needs, STL Engineering has evolved into a highly skilled group of engineers, analysts, Product designers and development specialists, and industry consultants that create innovative technological solutions for the rugged electronics sector.

“Our unique business models make us easier to work with because we effectively become a part of the client’s team. We adapt to their systems and learn about their environment.
Our flexibility is vital to a successful partnership,” says Shawn Veilleux, business development and system architect at STL Engineering.

Leveraging their vast experience in consulting, the team observed that a lack of communication between departments, low commitment to projects, and improper mindsets are the main challenges impeding successful product development. STL stresses the importance of teamwork, peer-to-peer reviews, and complete transparency, knowing that a group who works together with availability to relevant information has a greater likelihood of finding the best solution to a problem.

In concert with delivering routine transparency, STL’s client-first mindset as a professional consultancy requires minimal supervision which relieves client engineering operations. The team manages expectations and goals at the management and technical levels, openly sharing information to ensure course corrections are made early, keeping product development on track. STL works to solve unique challenges each client presents and comprehensively understands their existing systems and processes before tailoring solutions to meet their needs.

End-to-end Engineering and Analytical Services

“Our goal is to get all stakeholders comfortable with the way we work. We discuss our operations information flow with the management and technical teams to ensure everyone is working on the right things at the right time,” adds Veilleux.

During client engagements in the discovery phase, the STL team looks for a match in capabilities. It then initiates a small-scale pilot project so the teams can familiarize themselves with STL’s role as an extended arm of the organization and are apprised of all the information and communication between the two firms. Sharing their strategic business methods and experiences, STL provides added value by helping clients become more efficient in their operations.

Leveraging state-of-the-art tools and capabilities, STL analyses early within the design cycles to meet requirements and delivers a cost-effective evaluation of solution options to best meet project needs. STL brings much-needed resources and experience to assist organizations in thermal and structural analyses, mechanical design, manufacturing design considerations, rapid prototyping, root cause analysis, and more.

From rapid prototype phase to product sustainment, STL uses aggregate experience, management and capability to address design and comformance issues that may arise with a thorough root cause corrective action (RCCA) sequence. Here, a team approach promotes efficiency in defining appropriate and innovative solutions, improving product reliability and increasing the time between failures. STL is well-equipped with the knowledge and expertise to prove compliance and generate the necessary supporting documentation as evidence.

“STL’s team comprises passionate and experienced high performers. Our culture of open communication backed by years of experience allows us to share our ideas and reviews quite easily,” says Jonathan Shulist, product development manager at STL Engineering.
An interesting facet of STL’s culture is that the team doesn’t simply share ideas among internal employees. Staying transparent and communicating the organization’s processes and methods with clients has led to dramatic improvements in systems throughout organizational structures. This level of rigor becomes the norm, and everyone involved in the project benefits from invigorated and strengthened business methods.

Overcoming Hurdles and Fostering Success for Everyone

Although STL began as a small service company with experience in engineering analysis and mechanical design, it has quickly grown into a solutions-based organization for all aspects of product development. Its mission is to give clients a knowledgeable, professional resource for their project requirements.

“Over 15 years of direct consulting, I’ve observed many challenges in leading companies. The top three I believe are purposely trimmed budgets, time constraints, and inherent inefficiencies within larger companies,” says St-Louis. STL, is smaller and focused on being a vehicle for new ideas and innovation while carrying a lower overhead. The team reacts swiftly to changes in schedules and commitments and addresses inefficiencies with an agile method of development, which STL openly shares with clients.

This success stems primarily from STL’s personnel and its customers and how well they work together. “We learn their processes and formats while developing strong relationships with their technical team, knowing they know more than anyone about their product line, what has worked, what doesn’t, and where they stand on new approaches or design ideas. Without clients open to our approach and some of the best technical teams any organization could ask for, we would not be where we are today,” states St-Louis.

STL strives to understand challenges within clients’ business models and actively seeks ways to improve these systems and earn their trust. Removing the hurdle of the client having to ‘carve out’ work lessens the burden on them. This supports an open working group environment for better collaborations during product development.

STL’s quality of work is highlighted in a client interaction where the team was a part of a large design investigation to better understand the cause or causes of non-compliance to a product performance requirement. With impending deliveries and lengthy trials, STL addressed this by introducing an RCCA process with the help of the client’s technical team. STL understood to be successful, it would require the collective minds and ideas of many, including the team’s experts who were familiar with the technology.

After six weeks of investigation and rapid tests, STL discovered a primary cause of the failure. A few weeks later, final testing was proven, and design changes were implemented. The final report was used to share the teams’ collective findings with a commercial OEM. The collaborative process proved that with joint effort, proper processes, and a growth mindset, it is possible to solve problems of any size.

STL’s accomplished team tackles the biggest challenges in the engineering world and has scripted many success stories. The team strives to help clients succeed, from day to-day operations to achieving major milestones. STL works directly with clients and leverages valuable expertise to help everyone find the best possible solution to a problem.
